Thrill of the Find

THE REAL DEAL: My recurrent case of fashion fever did get satisfied this week in the unlikeliest of spots: 1172 Queen St. E.
I finally paid a visit to a secondhand shop call Thrill of the Find. A colleague had come in raving about the little spot that opened in her Queen St. and Jones Ave. neighbourhood before Christmas.
Pulling up to a forlorn storefront, I wasn't convinced there could be much inside. But wait, could that be a Jean Paul Gaultier dress hanging in the window? Absolutely, in double-layered tulle with a funky tribal print in muted colours, a signature Gaultier piece with a price tag of ... what's this? ... $130!! Inside brought more thrills (hence the entirely accurate name of the store) including a cheery yellow Christian Lacroix sundress for $90, a luscious black cashmere Max Mara blazer for $145, a stunning holographic silver leather Christian Dior vest for $395, and a silk chiffon blouse and skirt splashed with pastel-coloured camellias and trademark CC's by Chanel for $400.
In each case the originals must have sold for 10 times as much.
Mother and son owners Mereille and Joseph Watson run the store as a sideline to their film consulting business.
"My aunt was a buyer in Montreal for Le Chateau," Joseph explains. "When her fashionable circle of friends found out they could get a little money for what was in their closet, well..."
The Watsons bought by the closetful and say they have thousands of pieces of designer clothing in storage.
Bear in mind this business is run on a shoestring (don't expect limestone floors and halogen lighting), but the bargains make Thrill of the Find a gem.
